I cut the sausage into quarters instead of large 1" slices before cooking. It just tasted better to us this way.
After cooking the sausage, I continued with the recipe in a large pot because there was more room (less likely for the water to boil and spill out of the skillet). I added the sausage into the pot at the end.
Lastly, I did not use 5 cups of cheese. Instead, I used TWO (8 oz.) packages of shredded sharp cheddar. It worked out great.
