Better With Dr. Pepper
by Wes Richardson 2 months agoI don't like the taste of beer, so I substituted Dr. Pepper instead, and it tastes great! I also used a whole stick of butter instead of the 2 tablespoons, and added sliced green, yellow and red peppers as well as an extra onion for 2 total. I also used a slightly bigger pan, of course. Before putting the brats, onions, and peppers on a bun, I added a slice of provolone cheese. Absolutely amazing! Thanks for the idea and recipe!

The RIGHT way to cook brats!
by An Appleton-Sheboygan hybrid 9 months agoThis is exactly the method my Grandpa and Dad used for brats (Johnsonville--no other!). Boiling first and then grilling---NO! The disposable pan is good for tailgating, but if you grill these fairly often at home, you need a dedicated cast iron or cast aluminum brat-pot among your grill accessories.
Mmmmm!
by Dorraine McLeod 2 years agoThis was awesome for tailgating! Nothing was left! I LOVE Johnsonville Brat Hot Tub!!!!!
The Best Way to Grill Cook & Eat a Brat

Perfect for keeping brats warm and delicious
by Mandy 3 years agoWe made this for a fall bbq and the brat tub was perfect for keeping the brats juicy and warm. We also make a kraut tub beside it for those that like kraut - canned kraut, apple juice, caraway and a little bit of onion. Lovely.

Sheboygan Hard Rolls
by Randy Voll 4 years ago I was born in Sheboygan and went to my share of Brat Days. My son worked at Johnsonville while attending high school. It takes me about 45 min to grill the brats. Only the original for me. I let the charcoal cool down before I put them on the grill. I use a few pieces of apple or some other wood from some type of fruit tree. I will open and close the grill as needed. I smoke the brats by having the grill lid closed a total of 30 min or so. I brown all 4 sides. I only use my fingers to turn the brats. I never ever want the juices to leak out, thus not using utensils of any kind to turn them. When done I put them in a cast iron dutch oven with cheap beer, onions and kraut. I only use stone ground mustard. When I lived in Sheboygan the place to buy hard rolls was City Bakery. I understand it is still there.
we call them beer brats
by Texas girl 4 years agoAnd always add yellow, orange and red sweet peppers, fresh garlic and mushrooms. You just can't go wrong with this. We grill them first though it seems to really bring out the flavor. We also use cheap beer, save the good stuff for drinking :)
We've also added squash, zucchini and tomatoes. Don't hesitate to experiment with this. You may just find your "new" favorite food! :)

Holy Yumminess!!
by Leigh 4 years agoSadly, my grill is broken, but had an insatiable craving for a brat, so I adapted this for stovetop and boy did that hit the spot!! Seared the brats in an iron skillet on the stove to brown on all sides, meanwhile made the onion, butter, hot tub in a separate skillet. When brats were nicely browned, I added them to the onion hot tub, and finished in a 350 oven till the brats came up to temp (used a thermometer). These were amazingly tasty, the onions were mellow and almost creamy and the brat had a great snap and great flavor. Thanks for this recipe, I can't wait to get my grill working and do these as the recipe states. This is the flavor of summer!
Best ever recipe to cook brats
by fshndva 4 years agoWhen I make these at the cabin, never any left over. Big secret though; never use a fork, always use tongs. Keep those juices in the brats.
OLD TIMER
by Frederick Nord 4 years agoWe have been cooking Johnsonville brats since I was a kid in the 1950's It is always butter, beer and onions and has been so since we had the cottage in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I have changed things a bit by putting the 'tub' on the stove and slightly pre-cooking the brats in the mixture before putting them on the grill. When grilled they go right back into the mixture. It seems to enhance the taste. We put them on a Chicago Hard Roll. Using ketchup was a good way to get yelled at. My father always did it your way, but regardless of the method the brats are always delicious.
Old Time Family Method
by Grillologist 4 years agoIt's a GREAT idea! We use a re-usable Stainless Steel Bowl in place of the foil pan.
You can cook your brats, put them in "the sauce", relax with your favorite beer and
eat juicy, delicious brats for hours!
Great for parties- all year long!

by Laura 5 years agoANYTIME a Johnsonville Brat is involved, I know its going to be a great meal! i was excited to try this twist on grilling them though! I'm always so worried someone is going to get cold food when I'm grilling for a crowd, but when I used this method, they all stayed the perfect hot off the grill temperature without getting burned or overcooked!! I will certainly keep this method going when we grill!!!

Beerless Brats, Any other suggestions?
by Pete 5 years agoThe recipe sounds great! The only drawback is that I will be serving the brats to people who for religious reasons, do not partake in alcohol, including beer. Does anyone have suggestions of something non-alcoholic I could replace the beer with or would it be just as good without adding anything but the onions?
Thank you,
Thank you,

If you look under grilling they have a apple cider brat bath too hope this helps.

Hi Pete,
I could be wrong but when making beer brats, I was always under the impression the alcohol was cooked out from the heat. Look it up for yourself though to be sure.

Instead if beer you might try the exact recipe but put in Martinellis apple cider. The carbonated kind...be sure and cook it down a little...the cider really makes the brats great...not sweet but almost like they have been on Applewood smoke...the onions and peppers makes the brats taste great!
Good luck!
Good luck!

Enhanced flavor
by phxgeo 6 years agoOn 22 April I visited the Johnsonville Brat big grill truck at the Culinary Festival in Scottsdale, AZ. When they finished grilling the brats they placed them in this tub brew so the public did not have to wait to get one from the Grill Meister. It was convenient for the Grill Meister to handle fluctuations in the pedestrian traffic also. The flavor from the "hot tub" enhanced the already great flavor of their brats. I will use this technique for the batch of Johnsonville bratsI will cook on Thursday.
