Tailgating and Tradition

We’re not sure if it’s the taste, the aroma, the sound of sizzling brats, the way they complement just about any beverage or the fact that one brat recipe starts with “Open three cans of beer,” but brats seem to be the perfect food for tailgaters.

• Johnsonville Brats are available in 16 NFL stadiums, including Lambeau Field – Home of the Green Bay Packers.

• Green Bay Packer football is the NFL’s most tradition-rich. And to Packer fans, the most important traditions are winning football, brisk weather and tailgating, not necessarily in that order.

• Packer football has its own unique sights, sounds, smells and even tastes. The sight of acres of tailgaters sporting green and gold, the sounds of friends’ laughter and a radio broadcasting a pre-game show, the smell of brats cooking from a thousand grills along with plenty of sauerkraut and beer.

• According to Johnsonville Sausage, Packer fans consume about 25,000 brats during a typical Packers’ game – 15,000 inside Lambeau Field and at least 10,000 outside before, during and after the game.

• Brats and tailgating are so popular at Lambeau Field that Joe Cahn, who calls himself the Commissioner of Tailgating, has said that on game days, Green Bay should be re-named Johnsonville in honor of the aroma of thousands of brats being cooked in the town that day.

• Wisconsin leads the nation in brat consumption, with six times the number of brats eaten per person in Wisconsin than in the rest of the United States.

• All those brat-eating residents of Wisconsin would like to share the news with their tailgating counterparts in California, Louisiana and Massachusetts that brats are easy and fun to cook. Just 30 minutes on low heat and they’re ready.

Every Wisconsin resident knows that the word Bratwurst is German for "grilling sausage.“ “Brat” means "to grill" and “wurst” means "sausage".
