cooking directions :
Always thaw product prior to cooking. To ensure product is cooked thoroughly, use a cooking or meat thermometer to make sure sausage has reached an internal temperature of 160°F.
Spray a skillet with cooking spray. Add sausage. Cook over medium-high heat until browned, about 5 minutes, turning links often. Reduce heat to medium-low. Carefully add ½ cup water to skillet. Cover and simmer for 12 minutes or until cooked through.
Gas or Charcoal Grill
Preheat gas grill to medium-low. (If charcoal, allow it to burn until white ash has formed on the coals.) Place links on grill and use tongs to turn links often. Grill covered for 15-20 minutes or until cooked through and browned. (Closing the grill lid while cooking helps minimize flare-ups.)
Preheat broiler. Place links on broiler pan or foil-lined baking pan on center oven rack (7-9 in. from heat). Broil for 11-12 minutes or until sausage internal temperature reaches 160F, turning links every 4 minutes.
Medium temperature in a covered pan for 8-10 minutes.

This sausage is the best in any Italian recipe you make. I should know, I'm Italian. Even though it says hot, it's got just the right amount of heat. I don't like really hot spicy things, so I was sceptical at first when I used this brand. I was truly surpirsed how perfect the seasonings were in this sausage. I have never found a sausage that has fennel in it. My grandma always made her own sausage and she ALWAYS put fennel in it. As I said, Johnsonville is the only sausage that does this, at least in Minnesota where I live. One of my favorite recipes using this sausage is the Italian Sausage, Peppers, Onion, Potatoe Bake I make. My Norwegian husband loves it and I get at least two different meals out of one recipe. With the left overs, I add one large can of garlic and basil diced tomatoes and the dish is turned into a fantastic Italian stew.
I used the Johnsonville Hot Italian sausage in two dishes for my family, a pasta and a soup. It added such great flavor to both meals, I added very little additional seasoning. I tried baking and pan frying the sausage. The sausage had great texture with each cooking method and rendered very little fat. This was very surprising. It had heat but not too much. I am looking forward to trying another flavor if I can find them. The grocery stores only had hot and sweet links, no other italian sausage varieties if they carried the products at all. I thought Johnsonville only made Brats. I was very happy to find the hot Italian sausage and one with not too much caraway seed. I would definitely buy this again.
